The Fibonacci Scoring System

1. 2. 3. 5. 8. 13. IceCore turns one of mathematics' most recognizable sequences into a scoring system built for hockey.

Most fantasy scoring systems begin with a table of numbers. IceCore begins with a hierarchy.

A shot matters. A block matters more. A shorthanded point is rare. A win changes a game. Goals and assists define production. And a perfect night in goal deserves something special.

The result is a scoring scale built entirely from six consecutive values of one of the most recognizable sequences in mathematics:

Welcome to the IceCore Fibonacci Scoring System.

One Scale. Six Levels.

In the Fibonacci sequence, each number is created from the two that precede it. IceCore does not use the sequence as a mathematical formula for calculating fantasy points. Instead, its consecutive values form the entire scoring scale.

Goals against use the same Fibonacci value in the opposite direction: GA = −5.

No decimals. No fractions. No category exists simply to make the numbers look clever. Every step has a job.

Why Goals and Assists Are Both Eight

Many fantasy systems make a goal significantly more valuable than an assist. IceCore takes a different approach.

A goal finishes a scoring play. An assist creates one. Both are primary offensive production, and both begin at 8 points.

But that does not mean a goal and an assist produce identical fantasy value.

A goal is also a shot.

Because a shot on goal is worth 1 point, a goal naturally produces at least 9 points before any special-teams bonus:

Goal: 8 + SOG: 1 = 9

An assist remains worth 8.

That creates a natural advantage for goal scoring without artificially discounting playmaking. High-volume shooters gain additional value through every shot they generate, while elite playmakers and puck-moving defensemen receive full credit for creating offense.

Creating the goal matters as much as finishing the play. The shot separates the two.

More Than NHL Points

Equal values for goals and assists do not turn IceCore into a simple points league.

A player is not defined only by the number beside his name on the NHL scoring leaderboard. Shots, hits and blocks accumulate throughout the season. Power-play production adds value. Shorthanded production carries a larger premium.

That means different players can build fantasy value differently.

A high-volume winger can create value through shooting and physical play. A puck-moving defenseman can combine assists, power-play production and blocks. A defensive defenseman can matter without suddenly becoming an offensive superstar.

The objective is not to make every player equally valuable.

It is to make more kinds of good hockey players matter.

Why Blocks Are Worth Two

Shots and hits are high-volume events, each worth 1. Blocks move one level higher to 2.

That difference gives defensemen another meaningful path to fantasy value. A player who contributes heavily without appearing near the top of the scoring race should not become invisible simply because his value comes from another part of the game.

At the same time, blocks cannot replace elite production. They complement it.

The best fantasy defensemen are therefore not necessarily just the defensemen with the most NHL points. Their complete statistical profile matters.

Special Teams Climb the Scale

A power-play point carries an additional 2 points. A shorthanded point earns 3.

Both bonuses sit on top of the goal or assist that created them.

Power-play production matters, but it is expected from elite offensive players. Shorthanded scoring is considerably rarer, so it moves one step higher on the Fibonacci scale.

Rare events should feel rare.

Then Come the Goalies

Goaltending is where the system becomes dangerous.

Every save builds value. Every goal against takes five of those saves away. A win adds five.

And then there is thirteen.

Thirteen Points for Perfection

A shutout occupies the highest level of the IceCore scoring scale.

SHO = 13

Not because goaltenders should dominate fantasy scoring. They do not play as often as skaters, and their season totals reflect that.

Thirteen exists because a perfect start should have the ability to change a matchup.

Consider a 27-save win with a shutout:

27 SV + 5 W + 13 SHO = 45 points.

Now consider a 20-save loss with six goals against:

20 SV − 30 GA = −10 points.

Same roster position. Very different night.

That volatility is intentional.

Risk Is Part of the Game

IceCore has no bench.

That changes what goaltender scoring means.

Imagine entering the final day of a matchup twenty points behind. A backup goaltender is available. His start has not been confirmed, but the rotation, schedule and previous game suggest he may get the net.

You make the call.

Maybe he starts. Maybe he posts a shutout. Maybe forty-five points later, a matchup that looked finished belongs to you.

Or maybe he allows six.

The same move that could have won the week may bury it instead.

That is not randomness without consequence. It is a decision.

Schedule knowledge matters. Goaltender rotations matter. Scouting matters. Timing matters. And because roster space has value, the player you move to create that opportunity matters too.

The scoring system creates the opportunity. The General Manager decides whether to take the risk.

No Bench. No Automatic Decisions.

This philosophy extends beyond goaltending.

IceCore does not use a fantasy bench where productive players can sit unnoticed while managers choose whose statistics count. The active roster is the team.

That makes roster construction, waivers and availability part of scoring strategy itself.

A physical winger may outperform expectations because his hits and shots accumulate. A defenseman may become indispensable because his blocks complement his offense. A speculative goaltender pickup may decide Sunday night.

The categories are simple. The decisions created by them are not.

Why Whole Numbers?

The size of a fantasy number means very little on its own. Its relationship to every other number is what matters.

IceCore therefore avoids fractional values and uses a deliberately expanded whole-number scale.

One point is the foundation. Two creates the first step in impact. Three rewards rarity. Five carries goaltending consequences. Eight defines primary production. Thirteen belongs to perfection.

The sequence makes the system easy to read. The category weights make it hockey.

A System Built for Different Players

There is no single statistical blueprint for an IceCore star.

Goals matter. Assists matter. Shots matter. Physical play matters. Defense matters. Special teams matter. Goaltending matters.

But they do not matter equally.

The Fibonacci scale gives each action a place in the hierarchy while keeping goals and assists at the center of skater value. It allows specialists to matter without asking them to replace superstars. And it gives General Managers more information to evaluate than a single NHL points column.

Simple Numbers. Complicated Decisions.

IceCore scoring was not designed around the Fibonacci sequence first.

It was designed around hockey.

The categories were balanced around production, volume, defensive contribution, special teams and goaltending risk. The whole-number approach removed unnecessary decimals.

And the resulting hierarchy landed on:
